OFDM in Fiber Optical Communication Systems: Challenges and Mitigation Techniques
Omar Alnaseri, Yassine Himeur, Mohammed Alaa Ala’anzy
Abstract
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has emerged as a critical technology for nextgeneration coherent optical fiber communications because of its high spectral efficiency, flexibility, and robust tolerance to chromatic dispersion. However, OFDM systems in fiber links face two fundamental challenges that limit transmission reach and capacity: laser phase noise that destroys subcarrier orthogonality through inter-carrier interference (ICI), and fiber nonlinearities (primarily Kerr-induced effects) that accumulate along the transmission path. This report provides a review of current compensation techniques for both impairments, documents their performance characteristics, identifies research gaps, and outlines future directions grounded in recent literature.
